Match Build Up

It was a fitting end to our season to play our hosts Tarleton in this Evening kick off, Tarleton having moved up to the top of the table on 39 points, with us second on 38,A win was vital for us to become champions, a draw would see us finish second a defeat would see us in a play off with old rivals Greggy Ln.

Dave and I had done our homework by watching Tarleton against Greggy Ln,they appeared a well organised outfit with a very good agile keeper and a very good number 6 who was a tricky and strong player with a good strike in him we identified him as the main threat who would need special attention. They looked suspect to dead ball kicks and corners.

Wednesday nights training Dave was unavailable I gave the lads a light training session concentrating on free kicks and corners which worked well.

The Match.

With much at stake we arranged for appointed linesman or assistant referees as they are now called.

The game started off at a lively pace with both teams eager to take control but with nerves showing, we had instructed the lads to pick up the lively No 6 to nullify his game. This worked a treat with Andy closing him down constantly, his only threat being the one occasion when he broke through from midfield rifeling a tremendous shot which was goal bound, Dale pulled off a terrific diving save to tip it away for a corner .We started to gain the initiative and some good pressure saw us awarded a free kick on the right hand side. As practised the previous night Tom our left footer took the kick, his sweet kick was heading for the top left hand corner but the defenders somehow managed to get to it, the clearance fell to Glenn who made no mistake in heading the ball in for our first goal.

The game ebbed and flowed with us looking comfortable but the elusive second goal would just not come. By this time I had abandoned all thoughts of taking notes for this report, my nerves wouldn’t stand it

Half time 1-0

We resumed as before with our centre backs playing well and Tom and Andy dictating midfield, Andy requested to come off due to cramp, Matt Bird replaced him and he immediately got stuck in, We replaced Chris at right back moving Ben Jarvis from the right wing to play right back, Mark came on to take over .Still the elusive 2 nd goal would not go in. We then decided on a bold change, We took off Chris up front who was looking tired, We moved Kelham Molnar our { usual striker} from centre back who incidentally was having a tremendous game, up front to partner Glenn, and brought on our regular centre back Ben Young. This had the desired effect and a good move down the right wing saw Mark put in a lovely cross for Glen to head in. At this point we were looking comfortable with our opponents looking shell shocked.

Glenn then got his third unfortunately I missed the build up to it. We were ecstatic on the line and surely the game was ours, Dale pulled off another good save to deny our opponents any way back, Oliver replaced Ben on the left wing, Glenn was looking spent up front so we replaced him with Jason. In the final quarter we were well on top with five minutes extra time seeing us comfortable winners at 3-0.

Champions at last, we all went mad and the bubbly flowed { none alcoholic] all the lads floored Dave and jumped on him, Me having sense to get out of the way, A nice jesture being Tarleton,s manager speaking to the lads and congratulating them on the performance. I think Dave and I were more exhausted than the lads

Summary.

A great finnish to a great season and a trip to the Guild Hall for presentation night.

All credit must go to all the lads who have been tremendous all season, They really are a joy to manage. Special mention must go to Tom in moving from his preferred left wing to fill the void in midfield, Kelham Molnar our striker who on being joint striker on 21 goals moved into the back four when asked to; for our final two games thus sacrificing his chance of finishing top goal scorer.

Having finished mid table last season we let six players go and started to rebuild for this season hard decisions were made but, The new players signed on have adapted well, it took some time to find our best formation, moving Glenn from midfield, and Kelham from centre back to form a strike partnership was our best decision along with converting Tom from a winger to centre mid, Although unfair to single out players these changes have given the team a formidable look backed up by the rest of the lads playing good passing football which is our aim to do. Big boot football is not on our shopping list.

Finally

Special thanks to all parents, and fellow Lostock Managers Steve. Mike, Mark, Paul and all club players who turned up at Tarleton to support us, it was much appreciated by us all, apologies if I have missed anyone out but nerves got to me on the night.

Special thanks to Jayne our treasurer who’s work often gets overlooked and I had better mention Dave akka Joshe, rumour has it that he fancies Fergies job on his retirement.

We travelled to Garstang for the penultimate game of the season needing a win to sustain our challenge for promotion and, to finish as champions.

Team selection altered due to our regular centre back Ben Young being on Holiday, We switched our 21 goal striker Kelham Molnar to centre back to fill the void, a decision hard on the lad as he is in contention for leading Goal scorer of the season but, typical of the lad he accepted it with no complaints. Chris Donnely filled the vacant striker position.

Garstang won the toss and decided to take advantage of the slope on the pitch, The game ebbed and flowed with neither side taking the advantage, our lads appeared to be struggling to come to terms with the bobble pitch and our usual passing play was going astray, our main concern was in midfield where usual stalwart Andy McNaught was having an off day, although as usual he was chasing every ball he kept wandering off leaving us exposed in the centre, Partner Tom Evans was left to cope but, he continually gave away free kicks exposing us to unnecessary pressure, one such free kick split our central defenders and the opposing striker raced through with only our keeper to beat, I thought he was bound to score but, an amazing save from Dale at full stretch tipped it away for a corner [,the save of the match.]

We gradually started to take control but, chances eluded us we then decided a change in midfield might suit us more so we replaced Andy with Matt Bird, this had the desired effect when a nice passing move saw Chris Donnely slip a nice ball to Glen who tucked it away with 25 mins gone. A minute later another pass from Chris put Glen in but he shot wide. With 35 mins gone a good move down the left put Ben Burns on goal but a rather weak shot appeared to cross the line but, the man in black thought not despite our lads appeals.

Half time 2-0

With the slope of the pitch in our favour we continued as before but some of the lads looked tired and the hot weather taking its toll, We replaced Ben Jarvis on the right with Oliver Cross, and Ben Burns on the left with Mark Johnson, both players settled in well however our opponents continued to battle and Dale kept us in front with another 2 great saves. Our superior passing skills soon paid off on 50 mins when again Chris Donnely slipped a lovely pass to Glenn who bore down on the out coming keeper [Dave and I were screaming at Glenn chip him] but he had other ideas he calmly rounded the keeper and slipped the ball in for our third. Jason Ellison replaced Chris Donnely up front who looked worn out as he had given his all, Jason missed an easy chance soon after which he should have put away. Matt Percy replaced Chris Commins at right back Chris having put in a good shift. Five minutes left and a good passing move on the right flank saw Oliver Cross through and a cool strike saw Oliver claim the winning goal.

Result 4-0

Summary.

A hard fought game in difficult warm conditions on a bumpy pitch which was not conducive to playing passing football, However the lads adapted well and got stuck in most pleasing was the fact that we scored 4 and that is with one of our main strikers playing in defense, pleasing also in keeping a clean sheet thanks to Dale. All the lads put in good shifts and the subs used, all played well; The value of having 5 subs paid dividends on the very hot day enabling us to bring on fresh legs to keep the momentum going.

Our illustrious leader Dave Commins was missing due to doing his level 1 coaching session leaving, the team in my incapable hands.

Our hosts for this 11am kick off Hoole United were subjected to a heavy defeat by us in the early part of the Season, However they have shown some good form of late and I was anticipating a tough match.

I stressed on the lads during the pre match talk the need to get off to a good start as, in the last 3 games we had conceded early goals before getting out of the starting blocks.

It must have sunk in, for 3 minutes in to the game a through ball from midfield found Kelham unmarked and he fired in his 21 st goal of the season. 1-0. keeping up the pressure we continued to attack and Tom fired a cracking shot towards the top left hand corner, I was certain it was in but, their rather small keeper somehow managed to get his finger tips on it to make the save of the match.

Hoole weathered the storm and started to dig in putting Tom and Andy under pressure in midfield ,Our back 4 defending well but, suffering from poor distribution after winning the ball. As a result our wingers were starved of the ball, but Ben was having a good time on the left flank ,when fed, Against the run of play we conceded a soft goal played down the middle, which again our centre backs should have dealt with.

Half time 1-1

I changed Mark on the right for Chris thinking he would give us more penetration on the right flank ,this had a limited effect, but our best moves were coming from midfield and the left flank .Glen came close with a cross cum shot which bounced off the top of the cross bar. We continued to press on with Andy fighting for every ball, his persistence payed off with a lovely cross from the right to pick out Ben running in from the Left wing to fire in a rocket shot giving the keeper no chance.

The opposition fought back well and again put our back 4 under pressure but Dale in goal had little to contend with .I subbed Chris at left back for Damion as he was struggling with his distribution, this brought results when Damion played a lovely ball down the left flank to Ben , he made a lovely run down the wing cutting in and playing a great cross into the penalty area, beating the goalie only to see Chris miss an open goal from 3 yards out.

Again we committed the cardinal sin, A through ball down the centre saw Ben caught in possession from a ball which he should have cleared and Hoole; lively striker Jack Lewis claiming his second of the match. I replaced Chris for Oliver on the right who looked lively with playing some good passing moves. Jason replaced Kelham up front and he was unlucky in not connecting with his only chance.

Final Score 2-2

Summary.

A very entertaining game against a much improved side, well organized ,and who played with great spirit and sportsmanship, The Ref having no need for a Pea in his whistle.

Although disappointed in not coming away with 3 points the lads played well, and if we had converted our chances the game would have been ours. The negatives being,

Conceding soft goals. We need to concentrate on clearing our lines at the back, and our distribution.

Still top by 5 points with 2 games to play, its getting nervy now.

Pitch Small Narrow. sloping sideways

Surface Poor

Dave and I approached this Game with a little trepidation as our opponents are somewhat of a bogey side for us,over the years we have had many close encounters therefore, we were expecting the usual close hard fought game with no quarter given .On arrival our fears increased as we inspected the rather small narrow pitch,Dave even paced out the width to see if it did conform to standard, It Did.

We took a squad of 16 players enhanced by having Kelham Kosnuric back having been cup tied last week and, Matt Percy ilness.from ilness.

The match started off in the usual pattern with Fulwood starting well and putting us under pressure, our lads appeared complacent and seemed to be strugling with the pitch, this was apparent when Glen got into a great striking position only to see the ball bobble as he was about to strike it. The lads showed great resilence and character to fight back and take the game on, However we comitted Hari Kari again when we were once again caught out by a through ball down the centre which Kelham and Ben failed to deal with and after 15 minutes we were a goal down. Our lads uped the tempo and 5 minutes later Glen got on the end of a free kick and found the net 1-1. We were now dominating the game with Andy and Tom working hard in midfield and Glen causing problems up front, and we played most of the game entrenched in the opponents half,Glen latched onto a good through ball from Tom to give the goalie no chance for our second 2-1.

Half time 2-1

We decided a change on the left wing would give us more penetration and replaced Damion who, had strugled and replaced him with Ben. Fulwood must have had the hair dryrer treatment at half time off manager Jim as, they came out battling, they took the initiative and put us under pressure and, we were finding it hard to play our passing game on such a small pitch.

We introduced Mark on the right wing to replace Chris who was tiring, Fulwood continued to press hard inspired by their No 11Ryan Worthington a thorn in our side, and it was no great surprise to see them leval the score to 2-2.

Game On, Our lads dug in and we were happy we could cope with their attacks especially with our 2 full backs Chris and Ben dealing with any attacks from the flanks, Andy was as usual chasing everything in midfield but unusually for him Tom was having an off day, Glen and Kelham were awsome up front our only concerns being the centre backs who, were susceptible to through balls, we had, also strugled in dealing with long throw ins and corners, something we need to work on. Despite our fears the lads dug in and to our great relief Tom slipped a through pass to Glen who layed it off Ben who sent a lovely hard unstopable shot to score the goal of the game.

With 6 minutes left we moved striker Kelham into defence to shore things up at the back, the opposition fought hard and Dale was called in to make two very good saves, one a fingertip save to turn a shot round the post.the second being a lovely catch of a through ball with 2 strikers bearing down on him.

I breathed a sigh of relief when the ref blew the finale whistle. Result 3v2.

Summary.

As expected, this was a hard fought game against a good organised side, on a small pitch not conducive to our usual style of passing game on the plus side we fought back from a poor star Intand took the game to them in the first half. In the second period we lost our way a little and invited pressure, However digging in had its rewards and the lads ground out the result required.

We really do need to get outside training to rectify our failings on dealing with crosses and corners into the box, something which is difficult to practice in the gym.

We are still top of the league having been their for 6 months,Having 34 points and 7 ahead of our rivals, with 3 games left, we just need to keep the momentum going and continue to win even if we have to grind out results.

Our opposition for this Cup Tie Longridge Play in a Higher division than us, the one we hope to be playing in next season if all goes to plan ,having won all of their 8 games played this season we were expecting formidable opposition and a tough game.

At the team talk we fired the lads up, saying lets show them we are capable of playing in a higher division, and the lads appeared up for it. Our team selection was unusual in having one of our centre backs cup tied, We moved our usual striker Kelham Molnar to Centre Back and playing Chris Donnely up front. We also took a Gamble in playing our usual left back Damion Tyrer on the left wing and playing Chris Commins at left back.

We lost the Toss and had to change ends resulting in us kicking against the strong wind, the lads started well, closing down fast and putting them under pressure by moving the ball with some very good passing moves, However against the run of play Longridge scored with a great header from a cross, the lads continued to battle and put the opposition under great pressure playing good passing football, this soon payed off when Glen got the equaliser, Game On. The lads were now really up for it and with good support from the touch line they started to play their best football of the season. We went 2-1 up with another goal from Glen and were well worthy of the lead at half time.

With the wind to our advantage 2 nd half we continued the pressure passing well, with centre midfielders Tom and Andy controlling the centre and everyone contesting every ball, this soon payed dividends when Glen got another and his hat trick 3-1.

To their credit Longridge continued to battle and were awarded a penalty their big striker seeing his shot bounce off the post for a goal kick. This appeared to lift the opposition and they started to get into their stride, Unfortunatly for us things then started to go awray, Andy who had run his heart out for the cause had to come off with cramp, we re arranged by moving Mark into midfield and putting sub Ben on the right wing, Chris up front was looking tired so we replaced him with super sub Jason who, has a reputation of scoring when he comes on, Longridge continued to battle and 2 quick goals saw the scores leval, We then took a gamble and went 3-4-3 pushing Kelham up front to add more punch up front,We also replaced Damion on the left wing with Oliver, to our cost this proved a costly mistake and the opposition soon punished us with 2 further goals.

Result Longridge 5 Lostock 3

Man of the Match Tom Evans.

Summary. A really entertaining game played by 2 good footballing sides, showing great sportsmanship with a ref, who let the game flow.

Although disappointed in losing, we have nothing but praise for the way our lads performed and battled against a good strong side, most pleasing was the passing and moves we created. This verified after, when the Longridge Manager gave us the compliment by saying we are the best team they have played all season.

We can now concentrate on maintaining our lead in the league, ,with 4 games to play we need to keep up the momentum, and hopefully finish champions.

We traveled to the furthest venue of our Season for this Top v Bottom table clash,Taking a squad of 16 players.   As of late we have struggled against lower place teams,so we introduced extra training on Saturday mornings to improve matters.

At our team talk prior to the match We impressed on the lads the need to get off to a good start and not to be too complacement about playing a bottom of the table team as, have we have found to our peril these teams normally come out battling.

Team

The match started as expected with Poulton battling from the whistle and contesting every Ball, and our lads in complacement mode, 3 minutes in and a long ball down the centre not closed down by our midfield and not dealt with by our centre backs saw us a goal behind,Oh not again we said,  To be fair we rallied back and 2 minutes later Glen Thoroughood Netted to bring us leval Glen playing his first game up front from his usual midfield role,However we were still not on our game with poor passing, not closing down and the team out of shape, against the run of play Andy McNaught netted to put us 2-1 up.
Half time 2-1
The second half started in similar fashion with poulton fighting hard and contesting every ball, and all credit to them they soon leveled the score to 2-2. We then decided changes were due and replaced Damion Tyrer at left back for the ever reliable Chris Commins. Also changing Ben Burns for Chris Donnely on the left wing, This appeared to have the desired effect and Mark Johnson scored a peach of a goal with a volley taken on the turn 3-2. This got spirits back up and we started to play some good football.A further change was made in taking Mark Johnson Off from centre mid, and moving Andy McNaught from right wing into the centre mid,and bringing on Oliver Cross to right wing. we also replaced Kelham Molnar with Jason Ellison up front.Andy fought hard and a through ball to Glen saw him put us 4-2 ahead. Poulton continued to battle, and a throw in from the right side saw a long throw land on our back post, which we failed to deal with and a simple tap in to make it 4-3.   We re started and finally started passing the ball well putting the opposition under pressure  and a well taken goal from Tom Evans saw us 5-3 up.Andy had given his all and had run out of steam so we re placed himm with Matt Bird in midfield,We were now well on top and starting to dictate the game. Tom Evans scored another to make it 6-3 and the final whistle brought the game to an end.
In conclusion.   We started off very poor and the first half was one to forget, the second period we competed well and the score could have been much higher if Glen had converted some easy chances, at least 4. Poulton fought well and are worthy of a higher position up the table,One of the cleanest games seen and I can;t recall the Ref blowing for a foul.

Result 6-3.

We now look forward to playing Longridge town next week in a cup game. They being in a higher division, but having already defeated Lancon in that division we know it is possible providing ?  We can motivate them. [We all face the same problems]
